At Bignold Primary School we recognise that Computing is an essential subject for all pupils. Technology plays a significant role in modern life and we believe that all children should be equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate safely, responsibly and creatively in a digital world. Our Computing curriculum enables pupils to develop their understanding of computer science, information technology and digital literacy through engaging and meaningful learning experiences.
We use the Purple Mash Computing Scheme of Work to support the planning and delivery of our curriculum. The scheme provides a progressive sequence of learning that allows pupils to build on prior knowledge and revisit key concepts throughout their time at Bignold. Children learn how digital systems work, develop their programming skills and use a range of technology to create, communicate and solve problems. Oracy is a key focus across the curriculum and pupils are encouraged to discuss, explain and evaluate their ideas using increasingly sophisticated technical vocabulary.
Our Computing curriculum is organised into carefully sequenced units that cover coding, online safety, spreadsheets, databases, digital writing, multimedia creation and digital communication. Knowledge and skills are revisited and strengthened over time, enabling children to deepen their understanding and apply their learning in new contexts. Through this approach, pupils develop the confidence and resilience required to become effective problem solvers and independent learners.

Online safety is woven throughout our Computing curriculum and is taught explicitly in every year group. Children learn how to keep themselves safe online, manage their digital footprint, recognise risks and seek support when needed. We believe that developing confident and responsible digital citizens is just as important as developing technical skills.
We also seek to provide opportunities for pupils to experience technology beyond the classroom. Through cross-curricular learning, enrichment activities and the use of digital tools across the curriculum, children are encouraged to see Computing as a creative, practical and relevant subject that helps them understand and engage with the wider world.
We have high ambitions for all our pupils and are committed to ensuring that Computing is accessible to everyone, including those with SEND and pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. Learning is adapted where necessary through the use of appropriate scaffolds, adult support, assistive technologies and carefully selected resources. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to succeed in Computing and to develop the knowledge and skills required for their future education and lives in an increasingly digital society.
